I was able to see Nadia Comaneci and Bart Conner at the Hawthorne Mall in Vernon Hills, on Sunday, August 27, 2000.

At one end of the Mall, near Marshall Fields, there was a table and a huge card for everyone to sign.  The card was a “good luck” wish for the U.S. Olympic team going to Sydney for the 2000 Summer Games.  

A lady came out and welcomed everyone and talked a little about keeping oneself healthy while doing sports-like warming up and doing stretches.  Then she introduced Bart. Of course, he received a huge round of applause and loud cheers.   He is a very good speaker and seems really at ease.  Bart grew up in nearby Morton Grove, so it was like a homecoming for him.  He asked how many gymnasts were in the crowd and who would be watching the Olympics.  

Then Bart introduced Nadia, mentioning how many medals she'd won over two Olympics and everyone applauded. She talked for a little bit, saying how glad she was to be there and mentioning how good a place Hawthorne Mall was to shop.   Nadia has shopped there before.  Then they sat behind the tables and everyone filed past. They both looked great and they were very nice about signing photos and talking with people.  There was a huge line, but everyone was having a great time talking about his or her favorite gymnasts.

Behind me were some folks from Romania.  Their little girl is 3 years old and they brought some flowers for her to give to Nadia. Nadia came up to take them and gave the little girl a hug. It was really sweet.

Bart shook hands with everyone.  He and Nadia both seemed very relaxed, enjoying themselves, and interested in everyone who talked with them.
