A golden lining for sad Nadia

NADIA COMANECI, who came to Texas to regain her No. 1 position in world gymnastics, was ironically bottom in the list of competitors last night.

In the women's team final of the world championships she was fit only to compete in the beam event.  But her mark of 9.95 points - the highest of the night - clinched the gold for Rumania.

It was an incredibly gritty performance by Nadia, who is today back in hospital here having further treatment on a blood poisoning condition in a bid to get fit tomorrow night's individual beam event.

Britain's girls finished sixteenth with a score high enough for us to send two girls to the Moscow Olympics.
